In terms of its size, Pennsylvania is the country's 33rd-largest state, covering an area of 46,058 square miles (29 million acres). Of this area, 44,743 square miles (97 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 1,312 square miles is covered by water. Outdoor journal Seneca Creek recently pegged Pennsylvania as one of the country's "Top 3 Fly-fishing States," and it's hard to disagree with this assessment. The state is home to 480 species of wild birds and wild mammals, many of which can be hunted on almost 1.5 million acres of state game lands. Lands of America research shows that 85 percent of land in the Keystone State is privately owned. Based on recent price-per-acre data, Pennsylvania is one of the five most expensive states country for rural land. This data represents $321 million of ranches, farms and other land acreage for sale in the state covering a total of 14,657 acres. Farmland was the most common type of land for sale in Pennsylvania. Of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, Tioga County had the most land and acreage for sale.
